PRETTY THING TAYLOR, PRODUCES 1ST ALBUM!

IT'S ALL CHANGE FOR SPACE ROCKERS AS FIRST RECORDINGS ARE READY FOR LIFT OFF!

Almost as soon as it began, Slattery had left the band and  went off reportedly pursuing a Romany lifestyle in Ireland. Huw Lloyd-Langton was recruited in his palce. Dick Taylor [ex-The Pretty Things], had been advised to go and see the band, and had been suitably impressed with what was on offer. Fresh out of The Pretty Things and looking for something new, he hooked up with Hawkwind playing some gigs and being lined-up to produce their debut album.

CONTINUOUS PERFORMANCE

A steady stream of gigs continued for Hawkwind around London and in March they entered Trident with Dick Taylor, pictured left to record their debut album. After various attempts to get down something very close to their live set, it was decided to record the whole thing live. The bulk of the album is made up of a continuous performance, although it was segmented on the album. Book-ending the album were two busking-orientated songs which were lifted for the debut single release.

"That was the great magical album. It was quite daring, I thought" - Dave Brock was quoted as saying many years later

LLOYD LANGTON

"I was working in a music shop in the West End of London, and Dave used to come in after a day of busking to exchange all his pennies for strings and harmonicas. That was how I first got to know him. After that, I did a stint all over Europe with another band [Winston G] and when that petered out, I came back to London. I was in the underpass at Tottenham Court Road when I saw Dave busking, waited for him to finish his bit, and then he asked me if I knew where he could find a guitarist looking for a gig. 'Here's one', I said - and that was that" - Huw Lloyd Langton (Music UK, March 1985)

FESTIVALS

In June at the Bath Festival (although not actually playing inside the festival), Hawkwind bumped into The Pink Faries, a similar minded group of people playing a not too dis-similar kind of music and who were also based around the Notting Hill area of London. This group at the time consisted of Paul Rudolph, Duncan Sanderson, Russell Hunter [all ex-Deviants] and Twink Alder [ex-Tomorrow and The Pretty Things]. It wasn't long before the two bands were playing regularly together and finishing a nights entertainment with an almighty jam on stage featuring both bands under the monika of Pinkwind. This relationship continued for a healthy 2 years or so.

With the Pink Fairies, Hawkwind set about converging upon The Isle Of Wight Festival, with the bands setting up outside the fences and playing for 'free' in protest at the festival charging admission and going all corporate. By all accounts, both bands were there for several days of jamming together. Someone spiked the band's juice which both Brock and Lloyd-Langton drank. For Lloyd-Langton, who had previously had some bad experiences on LSD, this was too much and after a nerve-wracking performance quit the band soon after to get away for the drugs (although he would occassionally reappear, especially if Brock wasn't going to turn up for gigs). Also of note is that it was at this event that Turner first made the acquaintence of Stacia, although that initial meeting was somewhat brief, Turner tring to impress her by telling her he was in a band, and she being suitably unimpressed.

HARRISON AXED

The band had acquired a reputation for being a bunch of drug-addled freaks, but Harrison wasn't quite fitting in with the communal harmony, i.e. he didn't take drugs. For this reason alone, and nothing to do with music, he was forced out of the band, and a replacement in the form of Thomas Crimble was brought in.

ALSO IN 1970 - BLACK SEPTEMBER

On 6 September that year four airliners were seized by the PLFP - the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a radical Palestinian faction. They demanded the release of Fedayeen (members of the Palestinian movement) imprisoned in Germany, Switzerland and Israel.

Two of the planes were taken to a former RAF airstrip in the middle of the Jordanian desert, known as Dawson's Field. A third was blown up in Cairo after the passengers and crew were released.

The fourth hijack failed when both terrorists were overpowered on the plane. One was killed and the other, a woman named Leila Khaled, was arrested. The plane was diverted to Heathrow, the nearest airport.

Khaled, who had been the commando in charge of the operation, was taken into British custody.

Her presence forced the UK into a major international crisis.
